Green Spaces
Coventry’s carefully maintained green spaces highlight and compliment
areas of the city with residents and visitors flocking to make the most
of them. Coombe Abbey Country Park as always served as a popular site
which is at the heart of many Coventrians. The beautiful grounds were
originally designed by the highly acclaimed landscape architect,
Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The site includes a number of attractions
including the wonderful Heronry and Protected Woodland SSSI (Site of
Specific Scientific Interest) which serves as a hive of activity for
local birds and wildlife. The park includes a huge playing field used
both recreationally and for the education of young people, used
regularly for school visits and educational trips. Surrounded by masses
of fir, conifer, oak and awe inspiring redwood trees along with a
fantastic hard wood children’s play area, the space is one of Coventry’s
finest.
The War Memorial Park acts as one of Coventry’s premier attractions
for visitors, many of whom enjoy a casual visit as others attend the
special events which take place within the park each year. Approximately
48.5 hectares in size, the park has undergone drastic redevelopments
over the past twelve months. £50,000 was secured through the Big Lottery
programme to fund the improvements to this local green space; the money
will be used to purchase new play equipment including a new sand and
water play area, the refurbishment of older swings and the resurfacing
of play areas. Ongoing cleansing and maintenance of landmarks such as
the War Memorial Cenotaph continues whilst volunteers have actively
taken part in a mass planting session around the park to compliment the
improvements taking place. Run down pathways have been re-surfaced and
constructed elsewhere making it easier for visitors to manoeuvre their
way around the park.
Along with these key sites, Coventry boasts numerous lush, green
spaces. Longford Park, Lady Herbert’s Garden, Top Green and Allesley
Park to name a few offer plenty of space to walk, relax and host
numerous events. Coventry’s busy highways are kept clear, tidy and well
maintained with regularly cut grass verges, neat hedgerows and vibrantly
planted tubs and beds which encourage neighbour garden birds, insects
and wildlife to thrive. This work also ensures that Coventry looks its
best, all year round.
Ansty Park is the latest green space in Coventry to be opened up for
visitors and local businesses to enjoy offering acres of wildflower
meadows, agricultural fields and rural walking spaces. Located minutes
away from the M6 and M69 motorways, this unique green belt is a breath
of fresh air for nearby residents. Coventry city council continues to
provide open green spaces for the local Allesley Park and recreational
grounds. With climbing frames, swings, hard landscaping features and
open air views, it’s the perfect place to bring your family, as well as
14 other playground sites across the city, all contributing to the green
space quota.
Coventry City Council have worked within the community of Holbrooks
to build a brand new bespoke green area complete with play equipment. A
new slide with wooden areas for exploration and fun have been added to
enrich the lives of the young children and families who live there.
